Dr. Larson's Bovine Buffer is a sodium bicarbonate paste carried in a bland vegetable oil gel base, formulated specifically for cattle. It is intended to help alleviate acidosis linked to feed sickness or grain overload and to assist convalescing cattle as they return to full feed. The product ships in a 300 cc cartridge fitted with a super-short nozzle, designed to load directly into a standard paste gun for administration. To use it, the cartridge is placed in the gun with the tip removed, the nozzle is introduced at the corner of the animal's mouth, and the paste is administered slowly so the animal can swallow it in stages. Because the active ingredient sits in an oil-based gel, a small amount of oil separation on the paste surface can be expected and is normal. Dosing is weight-based and the total amount given depends on the animal's condition, with follow-up evaluation recommended a few hours after the initial dose.
