This paste is designed for topical application to the horn button area of young livestock to stop horn growth before it starts. The active ingredients, calcium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, work together to chemically arrest development of the horn-forming tissue at the base of the bud. Application involves clipping the hair around the horn button, then applying a thin, even layer of paste with a wood applicator, typically once the bud can first be felt. A ring of udder balm or petroleum jelly is commonly applied around the treatment area beforehand to help contain the paste and protect surrounding skin. Treated animals should be kept away from other animals and out of rain for a period after application to prevent transfer or premature washing off. Because the formula is caustic, it is intended for external use only on the animal and is applied with a wood applicator rather than bare hands or metal tools. The paste comes packaged in a jar for measured, single-site application per animal.
