In 1960, a dog lover came to Grannick's Pharmacy, complaining that her dog got agitated before every show, biting and licking his coat. No such product existed when Irv Grannick began his career, but pharmacists made their own chemicals and ointments. He tried many bitter flavors until he found one that worked. Friends encouraged Irv to offer "Grannick's Bitter Apple" to dog lovers and breeders. Much to his wife Mary's displeasure, his original "production plant" was in his kitchen. Over the years, Grannick's Bitter Apple has grown into a full line of taste-deterrent grooming cosmetics for pets.
